Revisiting my shell script problem, I started with this:

I noticed if I ran this as root...it worked fine!  This leads me to
believe it may be a problem with my @#$^! /etc/login.conf file.  Attempts
to make it work so far aren't getting me anywhere, but it feels like
that's where the problem lies.
