I have used squirrelmail (http://www.squirrelmail.org) and I like it a
lot. The phpgroupware group has also integrated squirrel into their
groupware web solution - calendar, tasklist, etc
(http://www.phpgroupware.org) I never got much opportunity to play
with it, but they have some pretty cool plugins (stock quotes, etc)

The only thing to keep in mind is that you will need to install the
PHP4 module for Apache (or whatever server you are using). Squirrel
will be able to send mail wether you have the PHP mail code installed
or not because they implemented their own. I do know that they have
really ramped up development lately on both projects, but I haven't
kept up for 3 or 4 months now.

You really can't say you checked out the best solutions until you try
these. I loved SM, and PHPGW really had a nice interface and cool
tools.

BTW, on both of these tools, the user can choose their own 'theme' for
look and feel. Pretty cool.
