So why don't you get another T42 with better battery and a wireless 
card? X series ThinkPads are also nice. With a good choice of model
and battery you won't need suspend to disk couse RAM suspend will
keep your machine ready for a week.

And a hint regarding xterms per pixel: WMI, DWM.
