Eric, I'm not sure about the current status, but i do remember hearing at one time that FreeBSD had problems with some boards using the VIA chipset. Soyo boards have always been good to me in the past. If you're set on getting the VIA board, I'd check out archives for the problem to see if it was resolved. I don't remember exactly what it was, just remember hearing that there was one.
