Is 16 colour the default in X4?

I noticed a problem today when I was trying to setup a new machine. I
ran xf86cfg and saved the changes.

I tried xdm but it failed, so I tried startx and that worked. I was
confused :)

I initially thought that I had DNS problems (had some earlier) but it
turned out that if I edited the config file to change the default colour
depth to 24 bit it worked fine.

This seems a little silly, ie that the default config doesn't work with
xdm :(
