Partition Magic = Partition Tragic. It has left me up you-know-what
creek without a paddle too many times. Of course I should have made
backups.

I used a tool called ntfsresize on a bootable Linux CD, either the
RIP (Rescue Is Possible) or SystemRescueCD images (I forget which
I ended up using). They are both listed in the ntfsresize FAQ at:

http://mlf.linux.rulez.org/mlf/ezaz/ntfsresize.html

For me, ntfsresize actually recovered a drive that Partition Magic
screwed up. I will never use Partition Magic again. The only
thing is you have to resize the ntfs filesystem, then truncate the
partition manually, so you need to follow the instructions very
carefully in order not to cause further problems. There's a
graphical tool called qtparted that handles this for you; it's
part of SystemRescueCD and is recommended.
