Yes that should be possible, but be aware that FreeBSD 4.x cannot read the UFS2 filesystem, which is the default for 5.3. Therefore the 4.x boot loader cannot boot 5.3, probably that's the problem you are seeing. Try reinstalling the boot loader using the 5.3 CD. HTH, Karel.
