Using the boot-pao.flp for 2.2.5-RELEASE, I observed that a failure of recompiling the kernel is not detected. In /stand/sysinstall, menu configure/PC-card allways returns with a success message. Whether there really is a new /kernel must be checked in the holographic shell (Alt-F4).
