i have a problem with the 'own' part.  it would be nice if we could
conference with people who do not run freebsd too.

last i looked, vic did not support the hardware i had at the time.
and just testing now i get a lot of

failed to open rw...
open wronly returns -1
HalfDuplex returns 1
HalfDuplex returns 1
HalfDuplex returns 1
failed to select input 
failed to open rw...
open wronly returns -1
failed to set mic volume 
failed set input line volume 
failed to output level 70
