Look: all I said was that he has "merits".  I did not say he was a
good person, I did not say you had to admire him for anything,
heck, I didn't even say he wouldn't be better if he was more like me.

[The above paragraph is not meant to imply _any_ characteristics
(good or bad) to rms other than that he has "merits".]

When the ncurses developers got in a really nasty fight, it was him
who succesfully intervened.  You can thank him that the developers
have now agreed to put ncurses under (old) X11-style license instead
of starting all over from scratch (which was dangerously close to
happening).

I understand he has had some involvement with the development of
emacs...

As a lobbyist, he has probably had more success than you have.  The
fact is that some of the software you are using (like, oh say the C
compiler) has been funded partially from money and/or code he had a
big part in wrangling out of other companies.
