FWIW: My significant other advises against dual booting with Win98 (it doesn't seem to like RedHat and may not like FreeBSD). OTOH, I'm very happy with my dual-boot NT/FreeBSD machines. We use RH's IP Masq'ing with @home's cable-modem service quite happily. Good luck! Kent -----Original Message----- From: M. Well, I finally decided to order a new pc ($500 for P233 MMX!!) and I am trying to decide what to do with it as far as FreeBSD goes. The problem is, I have to install Windows on it - I need the PC for work, and the apps I need to run are M$-based, so there's no chance to dedicate it to FreeBSD. Anyway, here's what I'm trying to sort out. I will have two machines - a P233MMX with 64MB SDRam and 2.1 GB HD + CD-Rom, sound card, etc; and a 486DX4-100 with 16MB RAM and a 1 GB HD, plus alternately a 24x CD Rom or a 500MB HD (only 1 IDE port, so I have to swap them out depending on what I need at the time. Lots of reboots...) I would like a nice X workstation running KDE or another nice-looking window manager (I've tried FVWM2, and will probably also try Enlightenment and AfterStep) - the 486 is just a little too slow for graphic-intensive X sessions. I will likely be ordering a cable modem in the next few months. What I am thinking is to set up my machines as follows: - Install Win98 on the 2.1 GB HD, formatted as FAT32. - Install the 1 GB HD in the new machine as a secondary HD, dedicated to FreeBSD with X - Set it up as dual-boot. - Mount the FAT32 drive in FreeBSD permanently so I can share files. - Install FreeBSD on the 486 500MB HD. (no X) - Network the two, using NFS if needed, and when I get the cable modem, I will turn the 486 into a firewall / proxy server. Any thoughts? M.
