It seemed to have fallen out of favor with a lot of FS people.  There are
some criticisms in the 4.4 book.  These included unpredictable
performance and poor performance while the cleaner deamon was running.
The cleaner deamon problem reminds me of performance problems on systems
that do garbage collection.

Larry McVoy has ripped on it quite a bit saying writing at the head is
stupid, but I don't know how much of an fs authority he is now days.

The problems seem surmountable, but working on lfs would require lots of
time.
