suspend and hibernate are almost the same thing, and easily confused.

Standby: keep state in memory, but assume lower power settings to
  conserve power, but keep transition to active state fast.
suspend: Save state to disk, but keep the stuff in memory to allow
  fast recovery.  Transition to hibernate after a while.
Hibernate: save state to disk, if necessary, and assume the lowest
  possible power consumption state (not quite off, but as close as you
  can get with a soft power switch).
