Pete, I'm very interested in your progress as I would like to replace
my aging Dell I8000 with an Acer Ferrari 4000 --> which has the same
motherboard as the machine you are using.

It looks as though the ethernet and most other things work (and I'm
pretty sure the graphics can be made to work), but your comment about
the sound was a bit of a red flag.  (I don't really want my main
workstation to be sans sound!)

I took a look around for chip id 0x43701002 and found that it seems to
be some variant of an ALC658 (conexant would be the modem, I believe):

I found a site by some fellow in France who has another notebook with
the same motherboard and his linux distribution is using the ac97 codec:
