Building world in the background then installing world and running mergemaster will take less than 15 minutes of downtime, assuming your system is fast enough. Since the buildworld is non-disruptive to normal operations the amount of time it takes is inconsequential. From the POV of start-to-finish, installing from CDROM or network is faster.
