Check the Mozilla related mailing lists. I have read there (long time ago :
-)) that Mozilla needs some features present only in JDK 1.3.x to make Java
work.
This  means it doesn't work with 1.2.x on any platform.

How complicated is the plug-in?  I had assumed it would just be a
wrapper around the virtual machine, in which case it shouldn't be hard
to write a replacement.
