After you plug in the external drive, are you seeing any messages in /var/log/messages that the
drive has been detected by devd/usbd/whatever?

I have a 500g WD mybook, and all I do is:

1. plug it in and wait a few seconds
2. mount /dev/da0s1d /mnt (as root)

Not much else to it.
