I have never actually tried to configure and build from
/usr/src/contrib/gcc with the GNU makefiles.  I always build from the
FreeBSD-specific makefiles in /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/cc which make sure
everything is built correctly and installed as the system compiler.

You should be able to go to /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/cc and type 'make all
install'.  A simple 'make world' would also work and would have the
benefit of rebuilding everything in the system with the new compiler.
