Ide write caching isn't even turned off by default as claimed in UPDATING.
The entry 28-Feb-02 entry in UPDATING about rotted when the default was
changed on 05-Mar-02.

dma being turned off would expain large disk overheads but not large
sys times, since they would be reported only as interrupt times.
