Hmm, what ATI card do you have?  I haven't had the problem you mentioned:

VESA: v2.0, 16384k memory, flags:0x1, mode table:0xc03a02c2 (1000022)
VESA: ATI MOBILE M3
pci1: <ATI Rage128-LF Mobility graphics accelerator> at 0.0 irq 11

Mike's Dell has a 1440x1050 screen, so you've caught up to him at least. :)
