Depends on what you want. If you want something real light and portable, the
various VAIO's I have seen are nice. If you want a big honkin' screen like I
do, then I recommend the Dell Inspiron 5000e with the 1600x1200 screen. If you
don't get the DVD ROM drive and you get the 5 gig hard drive with 128 MB of ram
I believe it is about ~$2800 US. That gives you some room to play with to get
256 MB of ram at least, and if you can put in a little of your own you can get
a nicer-sized hard drive, etc. The sound works fine in both -stable and
-current. X works, but you can't use 4.0.1 on it, you have to cvsup the X
sources and use an X-current server. :-P I haven't tried X 3.3.6, though it
seems to have a ATI rage 128 driver, so it might work as well. One known
problem is that apm support won't work under FreeBSD because of a bug in the
BIOS. :-( pccard and USB work fine though. The real win is the screen though.
:)
