Well, we have an Epson Stylus II and it prints quite well, but doesn't feed 
special (eg coated) paper terribly well.

Yes, get apsfilter which uses ghostscript and various filters to translate
just about anything you print (like gzip gifs for example :) into something 
your printer can manage. Its quite extensible (I added html support via 
html2ps)
