So you put on your bsd in.pmd in /etc/inetd.conf, configure portmaster to use your laptop (or other bsd/linux box) as host for ports you need and connect portmaster and laptop with regular ethernet. After it, On bsd box you have number of pseudo-ttys (/dev/ttyr0, ttyr1 or so) connected to RS-232 ports, modem controls (like DTR or setting port speed) will work. Only problem - it is size of portmaster (large enough to fit 30 RS-232 DB25 connectors).
