Just a quick note to inform those of you who've helped me with
this and those of you who are interested:

I was having problems with vtwm and the SVGA X server with an
S3 ViRGE/DX 4 MB graphics board on FreeBSD/AXP 4.1 running
XFree86 3.6.6. Pieces of screen were drawn in the wrong place,
overlaid windows still showed through the upper window, etc.

The "window manager" problems I was seeing are apparently due
to the SVGA server; when I switched to the S3V server (which
the Cards file says is "old" so I initially ignored it), all
of the problems I was seeing disappeared.

Thanks to all who pointed out what cards worked for them, so
I was assured that I would get it right *eventually*, even
with different hardware.
