I take the strings (English), translate them to French and German, generate the xxx.cat NLS catalogs, and so far, very good results. We are getting rid of the const sys_errlist[] array and doing immediate catalog lookup. So strerror() returns a string in whatever locale you have set. Similarly for the individual messages from each utility. My questions here was whether the iso-2022-* sets will work as does, say, de_DE.ISO_8859-1.
