By ungziping them.  freewais cannot index compressed files.
There is an interesting research oriented system called "mg" that
provides an inverted file indexing where both the text and the
index are compressed *and* there is a net performance gain in
searching.  However, it needs another layer of code on top to
match the features of freewais.
