 The spaces (non-breaking space for a colon) should be added during the
 conversion from SGML to the final format (if the stylesheet is correct,
 etc.) and should not be present in the source code.  In french
 there are many different spaces, it'd be very painful/difficult to add
 them in the source code, it's the stylesheet job.  The same principle is
 used when you type a LaTeX document: you don't have to worry about
 spaces if you added \usepackage[frenchb]{babel} for example.
 
 I missed these spaces before the check-in.
 
 Regarding the rendering of the French, last time I really looked at it
 there was issues but it was about 10 years ago... and no time to go
 further.
