Just do Java....

The jdk is available at http://www.freebsd.org/java

Use whatever Java IDE tool you like be it in Win95 , SunOS , FreeBSD.

I recently posted how to get Java Workshop 2.0 running on FreeBSD.

There is also a JACE a java version of the C++ library ACE, Adaptive
Communication Environment.

Has anyone played with IBM's SanFrancisco ? it is large java class package
oriented for business applications. Track inventories, sales invoice,etc..
