You are right Festival was very easy to port. If you are interested on CSLU thats the Oregons' Speech Toolkit see: http://www.cse.ogi.edu/CSLU/toolkit/toolkit.html It comes with cslurp, a tcl/tk fronted which can literally draw sound apps -- for instance a pizza ordering program.
