hmm...  this is interesting:

 vlc -vvvv --novideo dvd:/dev/dvd

works for me.  i can hear the title sequence of the matrix...

quality sucks, lots of pops and artifacts, but that might be due to the
XF86 4.1 compile running in the background now...
