For those who are interested, at the bottom of this message is
the output of dmesg on this machine, after a more verbose boot.

Interestingly, when I cold booted the machine (hit the reset
button), it came back up okay, so that I could make the necessary
changes in /boot/defaults/loader.conf so that I could get this
information, and then when I did another soft reboot (using `shutdown
-r`), it came back up again okay as well.

Also, although I've got DDB compiled into the kernel, it doesn't
seem to be recognizing the serial cable I've got attached, which
would allow me to cut-n-paste error messages. Is there anything more
I need to do -- maybe remove the keyboard and reboot again?

Anyway, it sure beats the hell out of me why this machine
seriously flaked out a couple of boots ago.
