Actually, just to correct a slight misconception here, it's not really
correct to say that FreeBSD's development model is "closed" - a better
description might be "tightly organized."  New developers can (and do)
volunteer their services all the time and, after a suitable vetting
period, are given free access to incorporate their improvements to
FreeBSD - there are over 120 such people at last count.  What the
FreeBSD project does is take responsiblity for the whole system and
its bundled applications, not just the kernel, and ensures that the
changes people make are correct through an ongoing peer-review
process.
