In order to fix problems with using my ELSA 1000pro PCI ISDN card under
FreeBSD 3.2 (specifically problems with hanging during boot), I tried
upgrading release 70 of i4b, which ships with FreeBSD, to release 83.

I had problems with spppcontrol failing because, I did not give config a
"-r" option when I built the new kernel.

Once I fixed this, my experience was

  1) Contrary to Udo Schweigert's experience, the machine would still NOT
boot while the card was connected to the line. Like release 70,
release 83 hung while attaching a driver to the first ISDN device.

  2) Release 83 was unable to successfully negotiate a PAP connection to my
ISP (FreeServe). In this respect, release 83 was WORSE than release
70, which negotiated the connection with no problem, based on the
     same isdnd.rc.

Since I couldn't get 83 to work at all, I have gone back to 70.

If anyone concerned with developing i4b wants to investigate why release 83
fails when release 70 works, there is a detailed log and tcpdump of 83's
failed attempts to connect at
     http://www.hcrc.ed.ac.uk/~robert/OCT2B

I'm don't have time to find out enough about PPP protocols to figure
out what it all means, but if someone can shed any light, or wants
me to investigate further, I'm prepared to give it another go...

Robert.
