You should be able to burn DVD's under 4.8-STABLE (or -RELEASE) just fine,
using a variety of tools (both the dvd+rw+r tools Matt ported and, for
the limited set of drives it supports, dvdrecord).

What made you think that only 5.1 supported DVD burning?
