 I had this problem right after KDE 1.0 came out. The problem is KDM doesn't
 set the path right and can't find kwm and friends. The problem went away
 after I put a usable PATH in ~/.xinitrc (or whatever, I don't remember, it's
 been working for a while :). Don't know if there's a fix or if this should
 just be documented somewhere. Since pre 1.0 releases didn't need the path
 explicitly set this seems to be a bug in KDM at least on FreeBSD.
