so, partially in response to the enthusiastic ratings on the Sony Viaos on
this list, and partially because my company just gave me one, i've taken
it upon myself to get freeBSD working on the Sony Viao 505tx.

i'm actually suprised at the compatability i've experienced thus far; that
the built-in modem was NOT a win modem, and showed up under /dev/cuaa1,
absolutely SHOCKED me.

however, i still have a few issues (at least under the new 3.3 branch):

Stefan `Sec` Zehl (sec@42.org) previously noted that "The Soundcard is
supported by the sb0 driver" on the 505; however, all i've gotten thus far
from the VOXWARE drivers (snd0) is the following:

sb_reset_dsp failed
sb0 not found at 0xdc
sb_reset_dsp failed
sbxvi0 not found
sbmidi0 not found at 0x330
opl0 at 0x388 on isa
snd0: <Yamaha OPL3 FM>

which would seem to indicate the sb0 driver is NOT my best bet...

luigi's drivers, on the other hand, id the sound card thus:

pcm0 at 0x220 on isa
ESS1868 (rev 11)

though that like like compatability, any attempts to play sound to the
sound card cause serious difficulties -- in fact, the kernel panicked once
already.

if anyone out there has any idea what kind of card this actually is and
how to get it working, i'd love to know ;)

then, there's USB.

Dirk-Willem van Gulik (dirkx@webweaving.org) was even more enthusiastic,
noting that "Basically everything works; apm, sound, screen, mice,
suspend, hibernate, whatever. Except one niggle; controlling the sound
from your modem. There is none. But in windows you can control it. USB
starts to work from 3.2/current onwards."
this largely reflects my experience to date, though, at least under 3.3,
USB doesn't work:

uhci0: <Intel 82371AB/EB USB Host Controller> rev 0x01 int d irq 255 on pci0.7.2
create_intr: requested irq255 too high, limit is 15
usb0: could not map irq

is this a problem w/ 3.3, or w/ the USB support in general?

if anyone else is toying w/ one of these, i'd also like to point out that
the PSM_HOOKAPM and PSM_RESETAFTERSUSPEND options are a GOOD idea if you
plan on using the touchpad after suspending ;)

pcmcia support seems a tad flaky, though i suspect this might have
something to do w/ my choice of versions (3.3 seems to have issues in this
realm -- though it's all ok as long as i don't attempt a hot-swap).

thanks for any help,
   kieran
