Aloha,

I have 3 servers and 2 desktops (All FreeBSD various versions) ( 10 
cards) with Trend Net ( re0 ) Real tech 8110 /1000 and 2 cards built on 
mobo.

I have not experienced this failure in 5 years of moderate service.

However, I did have a hardware issue that caused what you described. 
There were capacitors that swelled up on the board. You may want to look 
for something strange like that. It was a few years back in my case.
