The message: ata0-slave: ATAPI identify retries exceeded vanishes when the CD-ROM is configured as slave. This is probably an unrelated problem. It seems harmless. BTW. On the Dual Celeron, when I switch on DMA for the CD-ROM by putting "hw.ata.atapi_dma=1" in /boot/loader.conf, once the system is installed, the READ_BIG timeouts do not occur anymore.
