I use sylpheed with bogofilter. If I understand the combination right they are seperate programs, bogofilter is a program what gets invoked by sylpheed (or Claws in your case). Install the bogofilter port and try again. You can invoke bogofilter from the command line to see it is there and works. There are probably some settings required, but bogofilter works excellent.
