Given that my only AIX machine is an old Model 320 one, i can hardly
compare its speed to anything else, maybe except to the 386/sx16
i've got in a trashbin. :-)  At least, the latter should be of the
same age as the Model 320.

I have no doubt that the logging adds overhead.
