so one company I know does the following:

1/ fireĀ  up a regular FreeBSD UFS image,

2/ attach a new drive

3/ format new drive asĀ  boot system with ZFS on root

4/ populate and configure

5/ shut down system

6/ replace system drive with second drive, throw away old drive

7/ make ami form image which can be duplicated.

seems to work for them..
