Are you sure you have the kernel source installed on your system? I ask this because this is what the case was the first time I tried to compile a kernel under FBSD. Because if it's not there no matter who you are you can't get into it. If you don't have it you can get it with the /stand/sysinstall utility via online or off the CD if it's included on it. If you are on a dial-up connection it's going to take a while, if it came on the CD it will go pretty fast.

Building a kernel under FreeBSD is pretty easy really, as mentioned the only real problem I have had is when I didn't have the source on my machine. Annelise Anderson's book FreeBSD An Open-Source Operating System For Your Personal Computer, is a very good resource for someone just getting started in FreeBSD. However with your Linux experience you should be able to make sense of the Handbook. I like using the online version @ freebsd.org, because I figure it's got the latest updates in it.

I have built two kernels under 5.1 now. The first was a trimmed down version for my IBM box (which died unexpectedly) and the second for the Soyo that was purchased to replace it, because it has on-board ethernet that I didn't have supported with the first kernel.

Good luck
