I don't know. And what follows is more likely a description of problem
"avoidance" rather than "solution." That said, if your pain level is
high enough, "avoidance" may prove a viable strategy:

What I do, on my laptop (which has a miniPCI wireless card that is
recognized as wi0), is run FreeBSD 6-STABLE (actually, RELENG_6,
tracked daily) on slice 1, RELENG_7 on slice 3, and HEAD on slice
4.

I have things set up so that /usr/local is the same for all slices, and
installed the misc/compat6x port while the machine was running 7-STABLE.

All other ports are built & installed while the machine is running
RELENG_6.

In general, this approach works for me; YMMV.

In particular, I verified that I was able to fire up bsd-airtools -- one
of my access points at home is an Apple Airport, so bsd-airtools is the
only mechanism I have for managing that device -- while running RELENG_7
and HEAD (each built as of this morning).

Granted, I built the port under RELENG_6, so this may not be sufficient
for your needs.

(I was not able to verify that the program behaves properly, as I'm at
work, where my Airport is not.)

Peace,
david

I submit that "conspiracy" would be an appropriate collective noun for cats.
