I suppose that a reasonable alternative would be to have portshaker use a  
different
root (e.g. /usr/portshaker-ports) and then use rsync (--exclude .git) to  
merge this
into my git repository. So, I was incorrect when I said it would be  
unusable.

However, the behavior of deleting my entire ports tree was unexpected.

Right now, I'm just using portshaker until I have time to recover my ports  
tree.
