Nope, this shows that ``the "nul" word doesn't exist'' in normal
English. Put in another way, the NUL is abbr. from null. If you
can read in Russian:

http://lingvo.yandex.ru/cgi-bin/lingvo.pl?text=3Dnul

> The term which doesn't have any meaning is "null character".
>=20
Huh? That's exactly how it's represented in ASCII,
``null character (NUL)''.

I wonder, did you look at the pointers I cited?

Here's another good ASCII document:

http://www.jimprice.com/jim-asc.htm#controlcodes

Both this and www.asciitable.com were choosen from:

http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Data_Formats/Document/Text/ASCII/

You might also want to look at:

http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Data_Formats/ASCII/

which has a reference to ``ASCII Character Set, ANSI X3.4-1968'':

ftp://dkuug.dk/i18n/WG15-collection/charmaps/ANSI_X3.4-1968

Also, to what of my statements regarding the current statistics
of using "nul" vs. "NUL" and "null", etc. in my other emails in
this thread you disagree?

The text in manpage now says: "... if input contains null characters.".
I don't see how "characters" may be misinterpreted with "pointers".

Um, why? I followed the rules and asked fanf@ to sort-of back out
his change in revision 1.13, giving him the necessary explanations.
He didn't object. So my commit was effectively a back out.

I welcome you to re-read the whole thread which started yet in May
(uh, what a bikeshed!), I will send you it privately, to not overload
the lists.

I do not mind changing this to read "NUL character" if so will be
the consensus, but I learned to not change things that are already
correct, and if I do this change, I'll also do it in

bin/pax/pax.1
bin/pax/tar.1
lib/libc/gen/psignal.3
lib/libc/locale/mbsrtowcs.3
lib/libc/locale/wcsrtombs.3
lib/libc/net/getnameinfo.3
lib/libc/stdio/printf.3
lib/libc/stdio/wprintf.3
lib/libc/string/strerror.3
lib/libc/string/strxfrm.3
lib/libc/string/wcsxfrm.3
lib/libcompat/4.1/cftime.3
libexec/getty/gettytab.5
share/man/man5/elf.5
usr.bin/mkstr/mkstr.1
usr.bin/paste/paste.1
usr.bin/uuencode/uuencode.format.5

which all use ``null character'',

sbin/routed/routed.8 with a "NULL character", and a dozen of other
places that use `nul' (the latter was the plan).
