Most people don't run web servers. Many want to, and maybe it's a
good "and this too" idea, but if you're giving away thousands of CDs,
most people will just want to run it on their machines to see what it
does.

Summarizing a number of good suggestions, I think the CD should first
and foremost:

Create a reasonably functional FreeBSD environment running from
CD-ROM with an MFS file system for write-only. This can work well
on systems with large memory, and doesn't require any changes to the
disk. As a second stage, we can offer installation on a spare
partition. BIG RED LETTERS must spell out the dangers of trying to
install on a system which doesn't have a spare partition (and point
out that this isn't FreeBSD, this is elementary software
  installation).

Give them X with 640x480, possibly with the possibility of choosing
a couple of well-known boards at higher resolution. For
familiarity's sake give them xfvwm95 or another Microsoft-like
window mangler, and tell them that we can do better.

Put as much documentation on the CD as possible. I might even be
able to talk O'Reilly into putting a text version of CFBSD on the
CD, but I don't want to mention that yet until the project is more
concrete. Point to how this simple demo is just a taste of what
  FreeBSD can do.
