Thanks Jean-Marc, this has indeed solved the problem!

(A hint to anyone working with linux emulation - if you get a strange 
error from an X-based program complaining about an unknown visual, and
you are running a 16-bit display mode, go back to an 8-bit mode and try
again.  For some reason IDL (Motif?) thinks that 16bpp is 0bpp ... weird )
