According to an article in BusinessWeek: http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/01_50/b3761094.htm Non-Linux versions of UNIX are expected to slip from 14% of the server market to 10% next year, and Linux is expected to grow from 27% to 32%. Is this really true? This would imply that organizations are actively junking UNIX systems such as FreeBSD to go to Linux, which I find extremely hard to believe (I can't think of any reason why anyone would want to junk any xxxBSD to install Linux, which seems like a step backwards). Anyone know where these figures are coming from, or how realistic they are? The article also says that Windows will grow from 41% of the server market to 47% by next year. Some very important data is lacking here, which might change the perspective: - Which OS is most often used for servers on the open Internet? - Which OS is being used for heterogenous intranets? - Which OS is being used for homogenous, Windows-based intranets (Windows, probably)? - What is the total work volume handled by each OS, on intranets and on the Internet? My intuition is that UNIX is still the leader for large, external Internet sites, and for heterogenous intranets. Windows would be the leader for small intranets and small external servers of all kinds. The article also makes a specious distinction between Linux and UNIX, as if they were two different operating systems--that is true only in the sense of licensed trademarks, as far as I know, so Linux should be _included_ with UNIX, making the total percentage of UNIX servers by next year 42%. That is still less than Windows' 47%, and it also leaves a mysterious 11% being served by something else (but what?).
