It probably has something to do with collision detection or the way hubs work, perhaps by repeating the signal on both pairs of wire, but that's just speculation and probably incorrect. If you want to know more you ought to pick up a book on the subject. (as I should I guess :) ) Btw, cross-over cables can function in full duplex.
