Christians box always booted into single user mode if I remember right.
I asume it has something to do with the number of controllers/disks that
he has more luck.
It takes longer than 5 seconds for my SCSI probing ;)

Use the latest source.
John had commited something related WITNESS today.
I got a panic early in the boot which I asume is fixed with his commit:
